Various simulation software is utilized by students in MILL classes to iteratively design products and manufacturing and assembly systems to make the products. Simulations are performed to prove the designs will work before they are physically created. Software utilized by students include:

Mastercam

The official computer aided machining (CAM) program for creating G-code for operating computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines in the JEC Student Machine Shop, Manufacturing Innovation Learning Lab (MILL), and Haas Tech Center is Mastercam. Instructions on downloading and installing Mastercam for RPI Students is found in the Manufacturing Knowledge Base located on this site.

Moldflow

The official mold simulation software used in the MILL is Moldflow. This software is used by students during design iterations to predict plastic injection mold part success before producing their product molds in the MILL.

Octopuz

The official robot simulation software used in the MILL is Octopuz. This software is used by students to simulate assembly setups before final programming.

Altair

The official metal-forming simulation software used in the MILL is Altair. This software is used by students during design iterations to predict the results of forming various types of metals with a die design. The information Altair provides is very useful to predict if a die will work for a design before making the final physical die.

Visual Knowledge Share (VKS)

The official digital standard operating procedure (SOP) software used in the MILL is VKS. This software is used by students to create digital SOPs with data collection capabilities during the production section of the MILL courses. Students analyze the data collected to track the quality of the products and overall process efficiency.

Siemens NX

The official CAD software used at RPI is NX. This software is used by students to create 3D models of designs for classes, club and personal projects, and research. This software is utilized by students taking MILL classes to develop design iterations for products and the manufacturing and assembly systems to make the products.
