The O.T. Swanson Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory (The Design Lab) at Rensselaer is well known for its real world student-led projects. Beneath the design studio sprawls the cutting edge fabrication and prototyping shop that is supported in part by the generosity of Haas Corporation, the largest machine tool builder in the United States.
Fabrication and Prototyping Area (which includes the Introduction to Engineering Design project space, Design Lab Project Space, and Haas technical Center) boasts an array of the latest equipment. For a complete list, see the equipment section.
Haas Technical Education Center (HTEC)
Located in the Jonsson Engineering Center this facility provides technical assistance and computer numerical controlled (CNC) machining to support Introduction to Computer Aided Machining Class as well as services for senior capstone design projects in the Design Lab, upper level engineering classes and student club support. STEM outreach is also supported in the HTEC.
Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) Project Space
Located in the Jonsson Engineering Center this facility provides a fabrication environment for students to apply class lessons as they build prototypes for solutions to engineering problems. Resources include mechanical and electrical fabrication equipment, some supplies, and technical knowledge from faculty and staff.
Design Lab Project Space
The Design Lab Project Space in the Jonsson Engineering Center provides flexible meeting areas for collaboration, discussion, and presentations among student groups working on design challenges within The O.T. Swanson Multidisciplinary Design Lab experience.
